Faction lady of the night-ing. Yes, you know what it means and if you don't - good. Your clearly much younger than I am. And you need to stay in school...and don't do drugs M'kay?!?!? Anyways, back to the subject - faction envy. In the few short months since I started Warmachine I just realized - I have 6 armies with a 7th on the way. Just look at this - I even ran out of shelving!
Now its not as bad as it seems - I have PURCHASED maybe $200 worth of models. Bartertown is my friend. If you go through my posts you will see that I am a fairly prolific painter. And one mans tabletop is another mans beautiful standard. I am in no way trying to brag - so please do NOT regard this as such but I have been very blessed in what I have been trading on btown. When I expect to get 45 - 60% of retail most people have been buying at full retail - which I then sink into more Warmachine. But it seems that once I hit that magical 50 - 60 point range I go "Oooohh Shiny" and pick up some stuff from another faction. At a discount. So there is a life lesson to be learned here - if you are going to paint your army paint it all. Someone somewhere WILL like your painting and try to reward you for it. And even if you decide you don't like the army you are painting - finish it because it gives you practice for when you DO paint that army that you love.
Finally, being inspired by by fellow bloggerite/ dakka dakka member Felix over at Pokeminiatures (please check him out and follow him if you have not - great stuff there) I showed my wife his wall of painted-ness. Apparently she thought it was too cool so when I came home from work I had this:
Please ignore the lonely contaminant on the bottom right. My wife just loves the paint job. |
So now, instead of just having my wall o' Warmahordes I have a wall and case! Thanks alot Felix - you inspired my wife!! And got me a kick butt case!
In parting now that we have all had a chance to sit on "Gran Pappy Burb's" knee and listen to him rattle on I will leave you with a few questions.
- How hard/easy is it for you to stick with one faction? Why do you wander/ stay strong?
- When painting a model/unit do you usually paint one thing at a time, or multiple? I usually paint 1 but I am wandering.
Til next time-

I'm curious, are you the miniatures on your shelf in any particular order? It seems haphazard, but thought maybe they were in some kind of order not readily aparent.
ReplyDeleteBeleive it or not but they are. On the top shelf are my bile thralls and then all my cryx solo's. Next are my Cryx Cavalry. After the gap is my Merc Rhulic Army. Jacks are in the back and it is sorted by units in front of them. Finally the one rhulic solo on the far right.
ReplyDeleteSecond shelf is my Cygnar army. They are sorted by light jacks (each type is sorted together) then Long Gunners, then Trenchers. Next are the Heavy jacks in the back and then my 1 solo (journeyman) adide the Storm caller unit. Just ignore the pink - I got them in a trade and have not had time to strip them yet.
Third shelf is the main Cryx shelf. It goes Helljacks, Bonejacks, Thralls, Knights, 2 bonejacks that I only have 1 of (so I would not mix them in with the others - plus who doesn't like Cankerworm?), Satyrix, Overlords, and then Whithershadow.
4th Shelve looks very haphazard due to the mercs but beleive me it has a rhyme to it. First are solo's that don't really fit into any theme or are jack of all trades. Then I have some Sea Dogs nev tot all my Cannons (4 counting the commodore). Next are the jacks - I only have 4 (3 pictures)
Actually, now that I look at the picture they are all kinds of crazy. lol. I know I keep Kel on the right side since he is usually only played with the Khador - so there is some method...
Next we have Khador, and it makes sense. We have units - Mechanics, 2 Widowmaker units, Doomreavers, and then Iron Fang Pikemen. FInally I have some Koldun Lords. THe last little block is pretty simple but it loks confusing with gigantor Fenris in the way. Its All my jacks in the back and all my solo's in front of them.
Hope that helps.
To answer your questions:
ReplyDelete1) I find it hard to stick with just one faction. Though I did trade away my trolls for more Khador models.
2) When I paint units I tend to try to use up the paint mix on the entire unit. So I paint them as a unit(?) assembly line stile.
I hope that helps.
Nice collection! Gratz on the awesome family, they sound like keepers!
ReplyDeleteI have faction ADD, definitely. I've built three battleboxes in the past month, and have models from 4 factions in my painting queue. It happens to the best of us.
When doing units, I ... well, I don't have any units painted. None of mine anyway. The few I have done (clients, friends) were fully assembly lined. Everything of one color all at once. You miss less things since you know each model has a knapsack, pair of boots, rifle strap and holster for instance. You get in a rhythm for hitting all the spots with the current color. Plus, when you play with a half finished unit, they still look like a unit, because they're all at the same stage.
I'm excited about your contest!
